The African American Quilt Circle of Durham
at QuiltCon 2024

Raleigh, North Carolina
February 22-25

We take seriously our charge to maintain the heritage of quilting in the Black community and our commitment to supporting local projects.

The African American Quilt Circle (AAQC) was founded in Durham, NC, in 1998 as a way of preserving the heritage of quilting in the African-American community. Over the past 20 years, the AAQC has grown into an arts group of over 60 quilters and quilt aficionados, some of whom hail from as far away as Panama.

The group meets monthly at St. Joseph’s Historic Foundation at the Hayti Heritage Center in Durham to share quilting tips and resources, provide instruction for new members and support for experienced quilters, and extend the bonds of sisterhood. Read about our mission.

“It was important that we were a circle, because we had this idea of participatory teaching and learning from each other. And we always thought about having equal voice and ears in the process, because in a circle, everybody is the same distance from the center.”
