Community

Through its various outreach activities and achievements, the AAQC is highly respected and recognized as a major quilting group in Durham and North Carolina.

The AAQC is proud of its accomplishments in the past twenty years in promoting the quilting tradition, educating Durham and the Triangle Area about the rich quilting heritage in the African American community, and supporting the community.

The AAQC is committed to supporting community projects, and during the past twenty years, has contributed donation quilts to numerous groups and organizations, including:

  • Premature babies at UNC-Chapel Hill Hospital, Chapel Hill, NC

  • High school graduates at the Oxford Manor Achievement School, Durham, NC

  • High school graduates living in Durham public housing, Durham, NC

  • John Hope Franklin Scholars Program at Duke University, Durham, NC

  • African Children’s Choir™ from Uganda, touring US

  • Families Moving Forward (formerly Genesis Home), Durham, NC

The AAQC is also sought out by local and statewide organizations and communities to exhibit quilts, provide hands-on quilting activities, and educate on the tradition of quilting at various cultural events. Exhibits and events include:
