VERONICA HICKS

MEMBER, AFRICAN AMERICAN QUILT CIRCLE OF DURHAM

Veronica Hicks started sewing when she was hospitalized with rheumatic fever as a child. She started making doll clothes by hand and by the time she was released she was ready for her first sewing machine. Veronica aspired to be a fashion designer and took classes in pattern drafting and advanced sewing while in high school. She continued sewing and making clothes as a hobby. Although she was introduced to quilting as a child, it was not until many years later that she took another look at the craft.

Veronica moved to North Carolina in 1987. She enrolled in a beginning quilting class at Durham Tech. The instructor, Annette Bailey, extended an invitation to visit the African-American Quilt Circle. Through the years, Veronica has held several positions within organization. She is currently serving as Vice-President.

After attending numerous classes and workshops, Veronica has discovered that she prefers making quilts with simple designs and a wide variety of fabrics.
