DORETHA H. HAMIDULLAH

MEMBER, AFRICAN AMERICAN QUILT CIRCLE OF DURHAM

Doretha Mahidullah is a Durham county native, whose mother was a hand quilter for many years.  Doretha grew up sewing her own clothing and that of her family as well. It was not until joining the African American Quilt Circle did she appreciate the art and beauty of quilting. Quilting allows for self-expression, creativity, and fabric play.

A Woven Bouquet

What a great way to weave fabrics, bringing back memories of weaving paper. I used cotton fabrics to create the background, vase, flowers, and stems. The flowers are made of yoyos with embellishments of buttons in the center and, of course, you cannot have flowers without the butterfly with pipe cleaner.
