SHIRLEY BULLOCK
FOUNDING MEMBER, AFRICAN AMERICAN QUILT CIRCLE OF DURHAM
Shirley began sewing as a teenager but her love for quilts began at age eight when the grandma at the neighbor’s house gave her fabric scraps. She fashioned doll clothes from the scraps that did not require sewing. By the time she was married with two children the quilting bug bit her.
In 1984, Shirley attended her first quilting class and has been making quilts since then. The size of her quilts varies from postcard size to queen size. Traditional patterns with geometric shapes are her favorite. Inspiration comes from nature walks, fabric designs, quilt shows and magazines, taking classes, and an occasional desire to just make something originally designed. Motivation also comes from sharing quilts and ideas at the monthly meetings of the African American Quilt Circle.
