NANCY CASH
MEMBER, AFRICAN AMERICAN QUILT CIRCLE OF DURHAM
Nancy Cash is a Durham, NC, fiber artist and teacher. Some of her work interprets African American culture while other pieces simply present the beauty of texture created by manipulating fabric and adding creative stitch designs. One of her trademarks is to stitch words and expressions into the background of her quilts. Nancy exhibits with other artists locally and in curations that travel nationally. Her work can be found with private collectors and has been featured in magazines and books.
Nancy sees creating art as a continuous journey, thus she does not limit her herself to patterns, traditional methods, nor the concept of the word “quilt.” She has strayed off the normal path to create things like a three-dimensional quilted guitar, fabric covered books, fabric jewelry, and fabric covered masks.
A member of The AAQC since its inception in 1998, Nancy teaches design and technique classes to the members and organizes AAQC training and social events. She was the Project Director of the book The African American Quilt Circle of Durham, 2007. Before concentrating on quilts and fiber art, Nancy also created clothing, a skill she learned from her mother.
Nancy is also a member of Fiber Artist for Hope, a national diverse group of artists that organized in 2009 to exhibit art quilts inspired by the historic election of Barack Obama. The group continues to create and exhibit fiber art that addresses today’s social issues, promote dialogue for change, and foster understanding. Nancy participated in the group’s traveling exhibits The Unspoken Truth About Color, Reflections on September 11, and the Journey of Hope.
“I did not start out with a plan or vision to be an artist. One day I realized my work had unknowingly become my voice of action and a way my spirit can continue long after I am gone.”
